Summary :
In this presentation Dr. Phillips talks about the importance of coronary heart disease (CHD) in diabetes, particularly in women.

Is diabetes a CHD risk equivalent? A well-known case-control study reported by Haffner et al. in 1998 suggested that diabetic patients without previous myocardial infarction have as high a risk of myocardial infarction as non-diabetic patients with previous myocardial infarction (1).

In people presenting with acute coronary syndromes there is evidence, for example from the Euro Heart Study, that a large proportion of these patients have either undiagnosed diabetes or prediabetes. In people with diabetes, the risk of death is greatly increased after having a first or second infarct, compared to people without diabetes or history of an infarct (2).

What is the influence of diabetes on CHD mortality in men versus women? Diabetes increases CHD mortality in both men and women, however this effect is stronger in diabetic women, and they no longer are "protected" compared to their male counterparts as seen in the non-diabetic population (3).

Lastly Dr. Phillips discusses women's widespread concern of dying from breast cancer whereas the risk of dying from CHD is much greater, and even more so in diabetic women.
