Summary :
In this presentation Dr. Midroni describes the clinical features of painful diabetic polyneuropathy, reviews the currently available medications for treatment of neuropathic pain and suggests an approach to treatment.

The approach to management of neuropathic pain starts with eliminating other potential causes of pain such as cramps, musculoskeletal or ischemic causes.

Treatments for neuropathic pain include anticonvulsants such as gabapentin and tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline. Dr. Midroni presents the evidence for using these and other types of available medications and comments on the usefulness of simple measures such as soaking the feet in cold water.

Dr. Midroni concludes his presentation by proposing an approach to the treatment of neuropathic pain, indicating which medications would be suitable according to the patient's individual situation.
