"Societal Approach to DM Prevention in the Young"Prof. Francine Kaufman (biography)

Summary :
Rather than contributing to the emerging epidemic of type 2 diabetes in the global pediatric population, schools, communities and governments must play a role in preventing this disorder. There is ample evidence that lifestyle interventions can prevent diabetes in adults, and similar evidence is emerging of the salutatory effect of lifestyle change in youth.
Breast-feeding has been shown to be an effective diabetes preventive. Studies in American Indians and Native Canadians have shown a lower prevalence of type 2 diabetes in those breast-fed in infancy. Breast-feeding education, support and promotion as a type 2 preventive must be done globally.
A number of school based programs, for example in the US, UK, Japan and Singapore, targeting changes in nutrition education, physical activity, sedentary behavior and sweetened beverage intake have shown positive effects on adiposity, fitness and metabolic measures. Even without parental involvement, the UK study showed that education of children about the adverse effects of sweetened sodas improved food choices at home and at school and led to weight loss. This has prompted a number of countries and local governments to put forth regulatory measures to ban or restrict the sale of sweetened sodas and junk food increase physical activity programs and enhance health education curricula.
In conclusion, the principles outlined in the WHO report in 2004 on Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health must be followed to allow youth throughout the world access to healthy lifestyle choices and the optimal chance to prevent type 2 diabetes.
