  Biography

Dr. Richard W. Nesto

Richard W. Nesto, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Dr. Nesto received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He completed an internship in categorical medicine and a residency at the Strong memorial Hospital of the University of Rochester in New York. He also completed a research/clinical fellowship at Peter Brent Brigham Hospital and a research fellowship in medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

With his major research interest involving heart disease in patients with Type 2 diabetes, Dr. Nesto’s contributions have led to a wider appreciation within the medical community of the fact that coronary artery disease (CAD) is often asymptomatic and that treatment of coronary syndromes in these patients requires a specialized approach.

Currently, Dr. Nesto is a coprincipal investigator of BARI-2D (Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation: Type 2 Diabetes), a National Institutes of Health (NIH) trial evaluating treatment strategies to improve survival in diabetic patients with CAD. He has conducted studies evaluating the impact of diabetes on cardiac structure and function and directed major clinical studies evaluating the mechanisms by which pharmacologic therapy prevents myocardial ischemia. Also specializing in interventional cardiology, Dr. Nesto’s expertise in intracoronary imaging techniques has contributed to the elucidation of the anatomic substrate underlying acute coronary syndromes and the risk factors for procedural complications.

A fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Angiology, and the American College of Chest Physicians, Dr. Nesto is also a member of the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Diabetes Association. He was a participant in the AHA Prevention VI Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease and is a member of the Diabetes Committee of the AHA. He was selected to be the physician spokesperson for AHA national campaign, “Heart of Diabetes,” which was designed to increase awareness of the importance of diabetes as a risk for cardiovascular disease. He has also authored or coauthored more than 160 original scientific articles, book chapters, and abstracts. Dr. Nesto recently coauthored the chapter "Diabetes and the Cardiovascular System" in Braunwald’s Heart Disease.
