"Prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome in the City of Beijing and Developing a Prediction System for Diabetes in Large Population"

Dr. Tiemei Zhang (biography)
English - 2005-04-15 - 24 minutes
(17 slides)

Summary :
The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in the city of Beijing was defined by the NCEP-ATPIII(2002) among 15387 adults over 20 years old. The unadjusted prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 9.9% and the age-adjusted prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 7.55% respectively. Using 2000 census data, about 90 million Chinese residents had the metabolic syndrome. The syndrome was more common in the older people, affecting about 20% of subjects who were over 50 years. The prevalence increased more than 20 times among subjects aged over 50 years compared with those below 29 years. The prevalence rate of MS in Beijing should be an alarm signal for China to initiate an efficient prevention program.
A prediction system for diabetes was developed from the survey data by combined technology of statistics and computer knowledge discovery. Risk scores and decision trees derived from logistic regression model and data mining C4.5 algorithm respectively. The quantitative critical value for fasting plasma glucose level was identified as 5.85 mmole/l. All the information obtained by two ways could be considered as complementarity. The prediction system will be needed in screening and prevention of high risk population for diabetes.

Learning objectives :
After viewing this presentation the participant will be able to discuss:

- The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the city of Beijing
