English - 2005-04-14 - 19 minutes
(23 slides)

Summary :
The MS is a cluster of metabolic abnormalties conferring an increased risk for DM2 and high cardiovascular morbimortality. We investigate the prevalence of the MS in a sample of the Spanish population. A cross-sectional survey in 809 individuals (males 46%), aged 35 - 74 years. A OGTT was performed in all participants. MS was diagnosed according to the criteria issued by NCEP-ATPIII, 3 or more of the following were present : Abdominal obesity (AO): WC > 102 cm in men and > 88 cm in women; HTG > 150 mg/dl; Low HDL-C < 40 mg/dl in men and < 50 mg/dl in women;HBP>130/85 mmHg or use of antihypertensive drugs; HFG: (greater than or equal to) 110 mg/dl or use of antidiabetic drugs. The age-adjusted prevalence of MS was 14.3%: 12.5% in males and 15.8% in females. AO, HTG, and HBP were the most common combination in males (22%). AO, HFG and HBP were the predominant combinations (33%) in females. Prevalence of IGT and DM2 was 13% and 9.1%, respectively. Socioeconomic status (p = 0.038), educational level (p < 0.001), physical activity (p = 0.043), but not smoking (p=0.415) were inversely correlated with MS in females but not in males. MS was associated with age, obesity (p<0.001) and alcohol intake (p= 0.09). Overall prevalence of MS as defined by the ATPIII criteria was 14.3%, (females 15.8%) . An inverse correlation with socioeconomic/ education status and physical activity were found in females. AO and HBP were the predominant components of MS.

Learning objectives :
- To review data from a cross-sectional population based study to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the Spanish population.
