"Populations at Risk for Diabetes"Dr. Milan Gupta (biography)
English - 2006-10-24 - 29 minutes
|
 | (30 slides) |
Summary :
Diabetes is known to be associated with increased cardiovascular risk, and abdominal obesity is strongly related to diabetes risk (1) and the risk of myocardial infarction (2).
Is the risk for abdominal obesity, diabetes, or CVD similar among ethnic groups? The Canadian SHARE study published in 2000 indicates that there are differences, with South Asians being particularly susceptible (3).
Epidemiological studies such as the Nurses' Health Study and DECODE show increased cardiovascular risk even before the onset of diabetes (4,5). Dr. Gupta discusses the prediabetic states, and how the risk of diabetes associated with impaired glucose tolerance varies by ethnic origin.
