"Medication Matters"

Dr. Pat Phillips (biography)
English - 2009-11-24 - 43 minutes
(38 slides)

Summary :
Type 2 diabetic patients can take numerous types of medications both prescribed and complementary, and it is important to know which of these should be encouraged, stopped or better managed, according to their role in the context of diabetes management.

Ideally, the “type 2 tablet” would exist and include metformin, an ACE inhibitor, aspirin, and a statin, which would be appropriate for just about everyone with type 2 diabetes, and could in theory significantly reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, says Dr. Phillips.

Apart from the “nuisance” and “lethal“ side effects associated with common diabetes medications, problems such as postural hypotension, hyperkalaemia and renal impairment can arise from other types of commonly used medications. Hypoglycaemia and hypoglycaemic awareness can also be affected by non-hypoglycaemic drugs. Dr. Phillips further discusses complementary medicines and the “orexics” or drugs that promote weight gain.

Finally, in type 2 patients with complex multi-drug regimens, non-adherence can be a problem. Dr. Phillips talks about how to address the question of adherence with the patient, and which types of drugs need to be taken at a certain time or under specific conditions.
