Summary :
In this presentation Prof. Cooper reviews several recommendations of interest from the 2006 American Thyroid Association (ATA) Management Guidelines for Patients with Thyroid Nodules and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer, published in "Thyroid" earlier this year.
These are the latest ATA guidelines published since 1996. Although advances have been made in the last decade in the diagnosis and therapy of thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer, controversial issues still exist such as "the most cost-effective approach in the diagnostic evaluation of a thyroid nodule, the extent of surgery for small thyroid cancers, the use of radioactive iodine to ablate remnant tissue after thyroidectomy, the appropriate use of thyroxine suppression therapy, and the role of human recombinant thyrotropin" (1).
As a member of the ATA guidelines task force, Prof. Cooper gives some background on how the new evidence-based guidelines were developed, and reviews many of the new recommendations relating to thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer, with a series of questions and answers illustrating clinical scenarios.
