"Insulin Sensitivity in the Adiponectin Transgenic Mouse"

Dr. Terry Combs (biography)
English - 2004-05-14 - 22 minutes
(38 slides)

Summary :
Adiponectin is expressed in adipose tissue, and plasma levels are positively and negatively correlated with insulin sensitivity and BMI, respectively. In this presentation Dr. Combs provides additional information gleaned fom mouse studies on the mechanism of action of this hormone.

Clinical trials have demonstrated that adiponectin is upregulated in tandem with improvement of hyperglycemia in response to the insulin-sensitizing thiazolidinedione drug rosiglitazone. The transgenic adiponectin mouse generated by Dr. Combs' group is a reliable model for inducing circulating adiponectin, in order to be able to better understand its effects. This includes its effects on glucose production versus glucose disposal, as seen from studying different tissues such as muscle, liver and adipose tissue.

Learning objectives :
After viewing the presentation the participant will be able to describe the effects of adiponectin on:

- insulin inhibition of endogenous glucose production
- enzymes in the gluconeogenic pathway: AMP-kinase activity, G6Pase and PEPCK expression
