"Hypertension in Diabetes: Time Trends and Predictors of BP Control"

Dr. Peter M. Nilsson (biography)
English - 2006-05-17 - 40 minutes
(32 slides)

Summary :
In this presentation Dr. Nilsson talks about the importance of blood pressure control in type 2 diabetes, and presents data from the National Diabetes Register of Sweden on trends in blood pressure control as well as predictors of successful long-term blood pressure control in type 2 diabetic patients.

Raised blood pressure is strongly associated with the risk of diabetic complications in type 2 diabetes (1), and a number of randomized controlled trials have documented clinical benefits due to treatment with antihypertensive agents in type 2 diabetic patients. Dr. Nilsson reviews such findings and discusses some useful antihypertensive drug combinations that can be used.

Why follow trends in blood pressure control in patients with hypertension and diabetes? Because of the several clinical benefits associated with better blood pressure control in these patients and the potential for less human suffering and cost savings, it is important to evaluate the quality of care by observing trends over several years. In the National Diabetes Register of Sweden for example, doctors and nurses are given continuous feedback about trends in risk factor control, which allows for the achievement of better treatment goals year by year.

Dr. Nilsson presents data from the National Diabetes Register of Sweden showing favourable trends in glycemic and blood pressure control in recent years, and from a report published in the Journal of Hypertension, predictors of successful long-term blood pressure control in type 2 diabetic patients (2).
