Dr. Senator Guy Barnett
Guy Barnett was appointed a Senator on February 26 2002.
Born in Launceston in 1962, raised on a farm and educated at Hagley Farm School and then Launceston and Geelong Grammar Schools before studying law at the University of Tasmania, including a Masters of Law (Environment).
Guy Barnett practiced law in Melbourne and worked as a lawyer advocate in Washington, D.C. for Australian companies doing business with the US Government. He was invited to work as the senior adviser to the Tasmanian Premier, when he was just 26 years.
Guy Barnett developed his own successful and award winning public and
government affairs business, GBA Communications, with offices in Hobart and Canberra.
Guy Barnett was honorary lawyer and consultant for the Baptist Churches of Tasmania, the Retail Traders Association, Timber Communities Australia and other community groups.
Senator Barnett is, or has been, an active member of various Senate committees including:
o Employment, Workplace Relations and Education Committee
o Community Affairs Committee
o Scrutiny of Bills
o Select Committee on Medicare.
Senator Barnett has type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes) and is executive and founding member of the Parliamentary Diabetes Support Group.
Senator Barnett is married to Kate. They have three children, Nina, Alice and Ben.
He enjoys all sports but especially tennis and trout fishing.
