Dr. Salim Yusuf
Salim Yusuf is director of cardiology at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. As a Rhodes scholar, Dr. Yusuf obtained his Dphil from Oxford University, UK. During this period he was involved in initiating the concept of the large simple trials, coordinating the first ISIS trial and developing concepts of meta-analysis. Subsequently, he applied these principles to other areas that led to the SOLVD and DIG trials in heart failure- while at the U.S. National Institutes of Health- and more recently to the HOPE, OASIS and CURE trials. Dr. Yusuf holds a research chair at the heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, is a senior scientist of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and has received several research awards including the 2001 Prix Galien Canada Research Award and the Lucian Award for Cardiovascular Research in 2002. His recent interests include health in developing populations, and his studies involve over 55 countries in all the inhabited continents of the world.
