- Pathophysiology and pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes with a focus on molecular genetics of diabetes mellitus, obesity and other phenotypes of the metabolic syndrome
- Intervention studies in type 2 diabetes mellitus
Publications
230 peer-reviewed original scientific papers and 59 review papers and chapters in textbooks - of which several are published in high impact papers including Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Proceedings of National Academy of Science, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Diabetes and Diabetologia.
Patents
Based upon research in the group I have together with my collaborators taken 7 international patents.
Experiences as Scientific Supervisor
I have supervised 10 medical doctors for the doctor of medical science degree (DMSCi), 13 postgraduate students for the Ph.D.-degree and 27 graduate students for their master theses.
At the present 7 postgraduate students and 5 graduate students are training in the laboratory.
Other Professional Activities
I have had numerous pre- and postgraduate educational activities at the universities of Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Oslo, Stockholm, Uppsala, and Malmoe as well as at the international Steno Education Center.
More than 400 invited lectures at international and national scientific meetings.
I have administrative duties at Steno Diabetes Center (chief physician and director of research department of type 2 diabetes), the Danish Diabetes Association (president chair) and University of Copenhagen and Aarhus (professorships).
I am a reviewer for 14 international journals in diabetes, obesity, endocrinology, metabolism, molecular biology and molecular genetics.
I am the ember of the boards of 3 research grant foundations.
I have been opponent at Ph.D- and doctoral theses at the universities of Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Lund.
