Dr. Gareth Williams

Gareth Williams graduated with Honours in Medicine and Pharmacology from the University of Cambridge in 1977. After junior medical posts in London and Geneva, he did an MD on brittle diabetes with Dr J Pickup and Professor H Keen at Guy's Hospital, London. Subsequent research with Professor S Bloom at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, led to his interest in the roles of hypothalamic peptides in regulating energy homeostasis, and in obesity and diabetes. He now directs the Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Group in the Department of Medicine at Liverpool. His main clinical interests are in diabetes and obesity. He is on the Editorial Board of Peptides and edits the Handbook of Diabetes, as well as the Textbook of Diabetes (now in its third edition) with Professor J Pickup. Dr Williams autored the chapter on diabetes for the new edition of the Oxford Textbook of Medicine and other recent publications include A role for extrahypothalamic cannabinoids in voluntary hyperphagia and dietary obesity and Orexins and feeding : special occasions or everyday occurrence. Dr Williams is recipient of the Novartis Award for Diabetes Research in the UK, 1999.
